dear all,
e_perience makes you succeedi still remembered the first time when i became a technical secondary school teacher of english literature. it seemed that it happened yesterday.
at that day, i got quite ready and i had the confidence to be a good teacher. i arrived at the classroom, eager to share my knowledge and e_perience with all the students of my class. having prepared for two days, i had no doubt to hold their attention and to impress on them my admiration for the literature.
“stand up!” the monitor spoke loudly. the entire class stood up as i entered the classroom. i was a little puzzled, but quickly that awkwardness was over, i regained my calmness and began my well-prepared lecture, sure to gain their respect--- or even their admiration. ‘i’m your english, miss jiang. today we are going to learn . . . ’ i was very pleased with work . as the bell rang, i went back to my office full of a sense of achievement. the following day when i read my students’ diaries, the rosy glow was gradually replaced by a strong sense of sadness. the first diary said, “our literature teacher didn’t teach us anything today. perhaps her ne_t lecture would be better.” greatly surprised, i read diary after diary, each e_pressed a similar theme. “didn’t i teach them anything? i described the entire framework and laid the background for the passage we would study in class,” i puzzled. “how should they say i taught them nothing?”
it was a long term, and it gradually became clear that my ideas about education weren’t the same as those of my students. i thought a teacher’s job was to raise interesting questions and provide enough background so that students could draw their own conclusions. my students thought a teacher’s job was to provide e_act information as directly and clearly as possible. what a difference! i tell myself i can handle it.’ compared to what others have been through , i’m fortunate. thinking of these sentences i felt something important struck me. i believe my life would not be that bad and it was proved to be true. later during my life and work i always told myself ‘i can handle it.’ when my own goals seemed far off or when my problems seemed too overwhelming. and every time i said it, i always came back to my senses.
now the e_perience with my students has made me learn a lot, and made me be a better english teacher.
the following year, it was september 10th. i went to class as well. when i stepped into the class, i felt surprised. there was a post card on the table, but i didn’t show it on my face. i began teaching lessons. after the class, i walked out of the class with a card in my hand. i opened the card in the office, it was a music card with words on it. it said ‘many thanks to you, miss jiang. we all love you we like your teaching.’ i was impressed by the words. how honest and simple the words were. hot tears couldn’t help dropping. at that time, i was so proud of being an english teacher.
so here, coming to us are words that can give us strength. whatever you’re going through, tell yourself you can handle it. tell this to yourself over and over, and it will help you get through the rough spots with little more fortitude.
my definition of success
“once upon a time, there was a king who had a daughter as beautiful as a blooming rose. to all the suitors who came to the king's palace to ask for the hand of the princess, the old king assigned three tasks to be accomplished, each ne_t to impossible. one day, into the king's palace came a handsome young prince...' well, you know the rest. the three tasks may be different in different versions, but the main plot is always the same, with the prince claiming the princess's hand triumphantly.and the ending is always the same, finishing with the line 'and they live happily every after.'
why aren't we tired of something so fanciful, so unrealistic, and, i would say, so unimaginative? how can a story like that endure generations of repetition`? because, i think, it is a typical success story. it is highly philosophical and symbolic. by implication, we see a 4-step definition of success: 1 ) a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess; 2 ) challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks; 3 ) the process of surmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through; and 4 ) the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage.
the story not only caters to everyone's inward yearning for success, but also emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result. the reward of success will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa. if a person inherits his father's millions and leads an easy life, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. the term 'success', to be sure. will not sit still for easy definition. but as i understand it, the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor. to clarify my view, let me give another analogy.
if we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sent away david seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another david, namely david beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings. if we further changed the rules by not allowing arsenal's defenders to defend, so that beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared. in accepting the challenge, in surmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires its value. the sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.
the concept of success is not constant but relative because the nature of difficulty is also relative. something you do effortlessly might pose a great difficulty for a handicapped person. in acquiring the ability to do the same as you can, he or she achieve success. that's why we greatly admire stephen hawking, because, though confined to a wheel chair, he has contributed greatly to the field of science.
i myself, a rather shy person by nature who easily suffer from stage fright, had to pluck up great courage to take part in a speech contest like this. i could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not entering the university level contest.but i chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. now here i am. if i come out first, it will be a great success for me. if i come out last-i hope this will not be the case-but if i come out last, i will not call my attempt a failure, but will also celebrate it as a true success, because part of my goal is my own character training-to do more assertive, to be brave in face of difficulties. for me, it is a meaningful step forward, small as it is, in the long journey toward the final success in my life, because i have truly gained by participating.
let us return to our handsome young prince and the 4-step definition of success. you my have noticed that the usual worldly criteria of wealth, position and fame were not mentioned as part of the story, but rather, it emphasized the process of overcoming difficulties. the ancient wisdom had already defined the meaning of success, and this is my definition, too.
thank you.
today i am very glad to be here to share with you my ideas of success. what is success? it is what everyone is longing for.sometimes success would be rather simple. winning a game is success; getting a high grade in the e_am is success; making a new friend is success; even now i am standing here giving my speech is somehow also success.
however, as a person’s whole life is concerned, success becomes very
complicated. is fortune success? is fame success? is high social status success? no, i don’t think so. i believe success is the realization of people’s hopes and ideals.nowadays, in the modern society there are many people who are regarded as the successful. and the most obvious characteristics of hem are money, high position and lu_urious life. so most people believe that s success and all that they do is for this purpose. but the problem is wether it is real success. we all know there are always more money, higher position and better condition in front of us. if we keep chasing them, where is the end? what will satisfy us at last? therefore, we can see, to get the real success we must need something inside, which is the realization of people’ hopes and ideals.
different people have different ideas about success; cause people’s hopes and ideas vary from one another. but i am sure every success is dear to everybody, cause it is not easy to come by, cause in the process of our striving for success, we got both our body and soul tempted, meanwhile we are enlightened by the most valuable qualities of human beings: love, patient, courage and sense of responsibility. these are the best treasures. so now i am very proud that i have this opportunity to stand here speaking to all of you. it is my success, cause i raise up to challenge my hope.
what is success? everyone has his own interpretation as i do. but i am sure every success leads to an ever-brighter future. so ladies and gentlemen, believe in our hopes, believe in ourselves, we, every one of us, can make a successful life!
wish you all good success
have you ever thought why there are very few great people? i think there is probably only one great person out of 10,000 at best, and most probably much less than that. but why? most people want to be great, right? why are there only very few of them? here is the reason:
most people do not pay the price of greatness.
i think this one is quite obvious. now, the ne_t question is: why not? if there are so many people who want to be great, why only very few of them actually pay the price? the answer to these questions e_plains the difference between the almost 100% people who want to be great and the much less than 0.01% who actually be so.
the reason why very few people actually pay the price is this: the road to greatness is continuously painful for long time.
greatness requires sacrifices and there is no sacrifice without pain. the kind of sacrifices required for greatness is the ones that make the process continuously painful for long time. if you want to be good it will be painful only every now and then, and many people can still handle it. but being great is a totally different level. the pain is much deeper and it is continuous. very few people can endure this kind of pain and that’s why there are very few great people. most people naturally choose things that bring pleasures to them. it’s unnatural to choose pain over pleasure, let alone doing it continuously for long time.
but that’s what i believe is the secret to greatness: the secret to greatness is choosing pain over pleasures continuously for long time.

it is easy to describe success in terms of money, fame and reputation. but i believe that success is not e_ternal. i believe that success comes from within. my definition of success is to be true to yourself, and be true to others. that means, that you must cherish your personal ideal even in the face of adversity. i also believe that success is not discriminatory. success is not restricted to such a class of people, in fact, it may be achieved by any person irrespective of his race, creed, gender and economic background. a good e_ample of success is that of beethoven. he is one of the world's most famous composers, yet he was deaf. he could not hear the majestic pieces of music that he created. yet, in the face of this adversity, he was able to maintain his ideals--that of composing music.
to e_emplify what success means to me, i pose a question to all of you. what brings us together here today? i believe that it is the beauty of the spoken word. the effect of pause and the sound of rhetoric are unique to the spoken word. i believe the beauty of the spoken word is even stronger for those who have difficulty in e_pressing themselves. these people are reclusive and had their emotions hidden within them. i once went to australia and i saw two pictures, once was drawn by a normal child, the other was drawn by a child with social inhibitions. the picture drawn by the normal child was simple and plain. the other was life-like, full of details and imagination. what this shows is that these are ideas, emotions and feelings that are locked internally in these
children.
my ideal is to be the key, spreading the beauty of the spoken words to these children. these children have been neglected, but i feel that i can and should help these children to find themselves and be able to e_press themselves.
i realize that this is a difficult task, and there are many obstacles on the way. but i believe in my ideals and i will stick to them--even in the face of adversity. we should never have a premature abortion of ideals--let the child, let our ideals, stand the challenge. for a life without ideals is not living.

i myself, a rather shy person by nature who easily suffer from stage fright, had to pluck up great courage to take part in a speech contest like this. i could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not entering the university level contest.but i chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. now here i am. if i come out first, it will be a great success for me. if i come out last-i hope this will not be the case-but if i come out last, i will not call my attempt a failure, but will also celebrate it as a true success, because part of my goal is my own character training-to do more assertive, to be brave in face of difficulties. for me, it is a meaningful step forward, small as it is, in the long journey toward the final success in my life, because i have truly gained by participating.
let us return to our handsome young prince and the 4-step definition of success. you my have noticed that the usual worldly criteria of wealth, position and fame were not mentioned as part of the story, but rather, it emphasized the process of overcoming difficulties. the ancient wisdom had already defined the meaning of success, and this is my definition, too.
thank you.
is your definition of success a fatal mistake?
for some, success is defined in terms of the dollar amount on a paycheck. for others, it's the title on their business card. others may define success in terms of the accolades and awards they have won.
but the problem with how people define success these days is that when they're forced to change it, they can't. look at the businessmen who have committed suicide because they have lost fortunes. consider the workers who are fired and then go back to work, armed with a gun.
e_treme cases, sure. not everyone considers killing themselves or others when their livelihood is threatened. but it does point out that maybe we need to revisit our own definition of success.
start by completing this definition: 'success to me is…'
after you complete this sentence, then review it and determine if you're on the path to achieving that success. if you were to lose your job or money tomorrow, would your definition of success still be valid? or, would you consider yourself a failure?
i remember a job where i worked long, stressful hours and often labored for a boss who had mood swings like a freaking roller coaster. it made for a tense situation, to say the least. one day i was talking to a co-worker and the e_haustion was overwhelming. i felt so dissatisfied, frustrated and even angry. then it hit me: if i died that day, i didn't want the only thing on my tombstone to be 'always met her deadlines.'
ugh, i remember thinking. i wanted my life to account for more than that. it wasn't until months later that i started making some real changes in my life, changes that i know made me much better able to balance my life and devote time and effort to more than my job.
right now, times are tough and some of us are beginning to panic. but i think it's a golden opportunity to really think about what is important in your life, and weed out the things that don't really matter.
you are the one who must define what success is to you. one thing i know for sure: you are more than a job title, you are worth more than a number on a paycheck and you are more than an award to hang on your wall. is the destination you have in mind worth the road you must travel? only you can answer that.

no winning or no losing
perhaps the sky is still blue, but i can see the black sky. perhaps the flowers are still beautiful, but i can see the ugly flowers. perhaps the sun still shines, but there’s no sun in my world. perhaps the world doesn’t change, but my world is changing. the e_am has been over, but i can’t wake up because i think i did very badly.
but i know, even if you didn’t do well this time, but you can do well ne_t time. time can’t run backwards, you can try your best to do something well in the future.

success is everyone wants, whether it was or the cause of education. give people the joy of success.
how can we succeed? the great inventor thomas edison said, genius is 99 percent on 1 percent of the hard work and inspiration. success must be hard work. if you sleep, is unlikely to succeed.
edison invented the light bulb durable, he has done many thousands of e_periments, but still no way to enable the ability to live in high-temperature filament. ne_t to it was said: 'bah! can not find even a. you have made so many e_periments, and can not find, do not white and effort, and doing anything else now!' he said: 'i must ability to find a live high-temperature materials, he must find out. 'work pays off, he finally invented a durable light bulb, so that the well-being of people around the world to be known as the 20th century, one of the greatest inventions.
we need to learn the spirit of his, if he was not unremitting efforts, it is impossible to invent the light bulb durability, we can see the need for the conditions of success, as long as required to meet the conditions for success, success easy.
seize the opportunity is one of the conditions for success. for e_ample it! bill gates, the world's richest university, a keen awareness of the emerging computer industry in this huge business opportunities, he dropped out from harvard university, and with their friends opened a computer company called microsoft, when his friends friends are opposed to what he has done, but bill gates said, time will prove that i am right to do so. now, computers in all walks of life in a wide range of applications, to the people's work and life have brought tremendous changes, microsoft has become the world's largest software one.
there are a lot of success, for e_ample, scientific and cultural qualities of their own. without a good basic knowledge, even though hard work and a heaven-sent opportunity to succeed or not. there are left to help others, it is necessary to embark on the path of success and is e_ceptionally difficult.
to be successful, needs to be done and opportunities.

today i am very glad to be here to share with you my ideas of success. what is success? it is what everyone is longing for.sometimes success would be rather simple. winning a game is success; getting a high grade in the e_am is success; making a new friend is success; even now i am standing here giving my speech is somehow also success.
however, as a person's whole life is concerned, success becomes very complicated. is fortune success? is fame success? is high social status success? no, i don’t think so. i believe success is the realization of people's hopes and ideals.nowadays, in the modern society there are many people who are regarded as the successful. and the most obvious characteristics of them are money, high position and lu_urious life. so most people believe that s success and all that they do is for this purpose. but the problem is wether it is real success. we all know there are always more money, higher position and better condition in front of us. if we keep chasing them, where is the end? what will satisfy us at last? therefore, we can see, to get the real success we must need something inside, which is the realization of people's hopes and ideals.
different people have different ideas about success; cause people's hopes and ideas vary from one another. but i am sure every success is dear to everybody, cause it is not easy to come by, cause in the process of our striving for success, we got both our body and soul tempted, meanwhile we are enlightened by the most valuable qualities of human beings: love, patient, courage and sense of responsibility. these are the best treasures. so now i am very proud that i have this opportunity to stand here speaking to all of you. it is my success, cause i raise up to challenge my hope.
what is success? everyone has his own interpretation as i do. but i am sure every success leads to an ever-brighter future. so ladies and gentlemen, believe in our hopes, believe in ourselves, we, every one of us, can make a successful life!
wish you all good success!

it is easy to describe success in terms of money, fame and reputation.
but i believe that success is not e_ternal.
i believe that success comes from within.
my definition of success is to be true to yourself, and be true to others.
that means, that you must cherish your personal ideal even in the face of adversity.
i also believe that success is not discriminatory.
success is not restricted to such a class of people, in fact, it may be achieved by any person irrespective of his race, creed, gender and economic background.
a good e_ample of success is that of beethoven.
he is one of the worlds most famous composers, yet he was deaf.
he could not hear the majestic pieces of music that he created.
yet, in the face of this adversity, he was able to maintain his ideals--that of composing music.
to e_emplify what success means to me, i pose a question to all of you.
what brings us together here today? i believe that it is the beauty of the spoken word.
the effect of pause and the sound of rhetoric are unique to the spoken word.
i believe the beauty of the spoken word is even stronger for those who have difficulty in e_pressing themselves.
these people are reclusive and had their emotions hidden within them.
i once went to australia and i saw two pictures, once was drawn by a normal child, the other was drawn by a child with social inhibitions.
the picture drawn by the normal child was simple and plain.
the other was life-like, full of details and imagination.
what this shows is that these are ideas, emotions and feelings that are locked internally in these children.
my ideal is to be the key, spreading the beauty of the spoken words to these children.
these children have been neglected, but i feel that i can and should help these children to find themselves and be able to e_press themselves.
i realize that this is a difficult task, and there are many obstacles on the way.
but i believe in my ideals and i will stick to them--even in the face of adversity.
we should never have a premature abortion of ideals--let the child, let our ideals, stand the challenge.
for a life without ideals is not living.thank you!
failure is what often happens.it is everywhere in your life.students may fail in e_ams, science may fail in their researchwork, and athletes may fail in competitions.
although failure happens to everyone, attitudes towards failure are various. some people don't think their failure is a very important thing at all. so they pay no attention to it. as a result, they will have the same failure a previously later.they spend their thime and energy on useless things and they may really be fools as they have thought.
success is not easy to talk about because the word success it-self has hundreds of definitions. for some it means power, for some it means wealth, for others it is fame or great achieve-ments. but i have my own understanding of it.
success means to try your best.
many people believe that success means to win. in my opin-ion, it means to try your best when you do everything, no matter you will win or not. when you are taking part in a long-distance race, if you keep on running as fast as you can, you are successful, although you may be the last to pass the finishing-line. because you have showed your best to others, and you have made i your greatest effort to be the winner.
success means to work hard.
no one can succeed without any hard work. karl ma_ was successful, because he spent more than 30 years writing the book 'communist manifesto'; tomas edison succeeded, because he had e_perimented thousands of times to find the best material for lights. every success calls for hard work. if you want to suc-ceed, work hard first.
other people are quite different from the two kinds of people mentiond above. instend of being distressed and lost, they draw a lesson from every failure and become more e_perienced. after hard work, they will be successful in the end. it is said that failure is the mother of success. success will be gained after times of failures so long as we are good at drawong lesson from our failures.
in my opinion , failure is not a bad thing , the really bad thing is taking a failure as failure or even lose our heart after failure.
more importantly, today, the world is undergoing fast rhythm of changing, some issues occur in one way this time and reoccur in another way that time.such instability and inconstancy make many long-time-lasting conventions and traditions not valid any longer. people encounter pile of new conditions everyday in current society, it is hard to find adequate reference from the wisdom of conventions for all of these new thing, what can really lead people to success is rational mind and creative ways of thinking. to meet the requirement of new missions, only creative activities could give out adaptive strategies. without creative thinking ways, there would no such increasingly development of science and technology in the past two centuries, no new type america-style democracy in the world, no so many products making modern life so comfortable and convenient. creative practices and original idea are the engine of the fast development of modern life, and are most essential for people to accomplish successful achievement in all kinds of fields.

good morning. ladies and gentlemen. life has its ups and downs. i bet everyone here has gone through success and failures, am i right? therefore, what's your understanding of success and failure? what do you think is the biggest success in one's life? ___, can you share your idea with us?
personally, i think success and failure are terms that don't necessarily call for a universal definition since all of us have our own definitions. that is to say, people can be successful in different areas such as in one's job and hobbies, living a successful private life, or running a successful relationship. assume that there are two men, one is wealthy and the other is needy. the wealthy one loves making money and is always busy with his work. he is satisfied with his business though he hardly has time to have dinner with his wife and children. the needy one loves leisure. he has an easy but low-paid job so that he can have time to spend with his family. in general, he could have delicious and warm dinner with his families every day. he's happy, too. which one do you think is more successful in his life? in my opinion, they are both successful because they both get what they want.
everyone will be successful in his or her own area. so, never look down on anyone including yourself. one of my friends is crazy about computer games, thus neglecting his study. all the teachers regarded him as a failure. but actually he is successful in the games. he has won the first prize in many e-sports games.
another e_ample to support my statement. i think that everyone knows luo yufeng who is in america now. severals years ago, she was under the spotlight and attracted a strong criticism. it seemed that her life was utterly a failure since everyone was laughing at her. but, i think she is successful not because she’s famous but she wanted to immigrant to america and achieved.
in many cases, whether we are successful or not is judged by others, actually, we should judge it by
ourselves. as long as you have your own goal, you know e_actly what you want, you are successful when you achieve it. so, leave all the negative comments outside the door. be yourself, follow your own cause and enjoy your own success!
thank you sincerely!

what success means to me?
once upon a time, an old rich woman left all her property to the person who could answer her question correctly. her question was this “what is the most important thing for a person who wants to succeed?” to my surprise, the answer was not money, not power, not even opportunity, but “ambition”.
why is ambition so important? a person without ambition is like a near-sighted lion. all the things in the distance appear blurred. no matter how strong it is, it can't go far.
a lion lives to rule the whole plain. a person must prove that “i am a king here”, at least you are the king of yourself.
nowadays, the world is very competitive. even if you get to the top of your own field, there might be still someone better than you. so we have to ask ourselves: what is the proof of success? i believe it is doing something for this world.
remember: as a successful person, in addition to ambition, the other key you must hold is love. when you look back at history, you'll find you were standing on the shoulders of the giants. you have enjoyed what they had left you. so we should live to work for the improvement of the world. from president to citizen, we should all take part in building a new www for which i have my own e_planation ----it is“of the world, by the world, for the world”. only as a member of the global village, can you feel you are really successful.
belief in yourself is the secret of success
from the moment we are born, our destiny had been set. it is the start of our life. as a little child, we go to school and are curious to everything in the world.
when we get older, we tend to understand the function in this world.
we start to think, sometimes wonder about life. ne_t thing we know, we are growing up. the world is changing, and our life is changing everyday.
right now, this particular moment in our life, we think again.
we have we done in our life?
are we successful?
are we rich?
are we happy? and flashbacks starts, the memories took charge of our brain.
we reflect to ourselves, we question ourselves.
why are we not successful?
why are we not rich?
why are we not happy?
then, we need to ask how.
how to be successful?
how to be rich?
how to be happy?
with the questions, we figure out the answers. one of the dominating techqniue to be successful is first start from yourself. believe in yourself. if you don't believe in what you can do, then who else?
if you don't care about yourself, then who else? trust your feelings, believe that you can do it. and as long as you hold that thought, nothing, nothing can stop you.
the successful future right ahead of you are led by a pathway called belief.

(三)結(jié)尾要簡潔有力,余音繞梁。結(jié)尾是演講內(nèi)容的自然收束。言簡意賅、余音繞梁的結(jié)尾能夠使聽眾精神振奮,并促使聽眾不斷地思考和回味;
